Listen "Ch14 - Gilpin's Vision for a "Cosmopolitan Railway""
Episode Synopsis
Gilpin's Vision for a "Cosmopolitan Railway"William Gilpin believed that railways would soon connect all the continents, uniting the world's people and cultures. He envisioned a "Cosmopolitan Railway" that would begin in North America, extend across the Bering Strait, and continue through Russia and into Europe and Asia. Gilpin believed that this railway would be built with American principles and lead to a more peaceful and prosperous world. Gilpin outlined this vision in detail in his 1890 book, The Cosmopolitan Railway, in which he argued that the railway would foster global commerce and cultural exchange, ultimately creating a more harmonious and interconnected world. He believed that such an endeavor would be financially feasible, drawing parallels to how the Civil War debt had been repaid through public works. Hosted on Acast.
