Episode Synopsis

Episode 2: “We all must eat”
The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company: A history of consumer retail innovation
Description:
Five generations ago, if you lived in an urban area within the U.S., then you were likely spending at least
half of your weekly household income on groceries. To make matters worse, these groceries were
typically paid for on store credit. This was a devastating financial burden.
One retail operation led by a family of entrepreneurs changed all this by pioneering new store formats
and distribution channels. They were able to leverage mass purchasing power and innovation to
significantly reduce the cost of products to consumers. Thus, improving the American standard of living.
It was a family run operation, led by a father and his two sons, that were responsible for creating
America’s first great retail empire. Expanding the operation to nearly 16,000 stores at a point and
becoming the largest retailer in the world for many decades throughout the 20th century. They became
the first retailers in history to hit the $1 billion revenue mark.
Today’s leading retailers, household brands like Walmart and Amazon pale in comparison to this once
Brobdingnagian (gigantic) corporation.
These men achieved this entrepreneurial feat in the absence of formal education beyond high school.
Yet, their contributions to the improvement of American retail changed the trajectory of every American
they served by lowering the cost of the most essential goods that consumers buy.
It’s said that if you want to build something great, then start with the problem. The Great Atlantic &
Pacific Tea Co. epitomized this idea. The problem was that the average American couldn’t feed their
families without going into debt. That was the problem they solved, and in doing so they established
scalability, chain stores, and brand recognition as the hallmarks of American retail.
Today’s episode is the first of a multi-episode installment on the legacy of America’s first great retailer. I
believe what you’ll learn after listening to this series of episodes on A & P is that so many of the
strategies that we look at today as innovative are just repackaged imitations of what has already been
accomplished. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Feel free to Send a voice message to the

Ladies and gentlemen, today we begin the most comprehensive business history of A & P in the podcast
world. A company that went from the height of success to utter obscurity at its end when the operation
shuttered in 2015 due to bankruptcy, but the fundamental practices and innovations of the once iconic
brand are still imitated by every retail chain today.
Please note: Most of the content I’m sharing in these episodes comes from master’s thesis work that I
personally conducted in 2009. My goal is to make it as enjoyable and non-academic as possible. Our goal is to create a go-to podcast for people who make their living in the competitive world of retail
and wholesale. We'll discuss the latest product trends and our favorite products you probably don't yet
know about.
