If you do not have an intimate relationship with Christ then you're not going to know what he sounds like, or feels like in order to be led by him. Too many people making the claim of being born again are being led by men rather than by the spirit of the living God. You don't need man in between you and Christ, because just as sure as man has a presence in between you and the Lord's relationship he's going to try and get the glory rather than allowing glory to be rendered unto God.
