Listen "Dumb NFL Rules"

Episode Synopsis

This week, we're talking all about dumb NFL rules—inspired by the recent ban of the "hip-drop tackle." Some NFL rule changes are good—like allowing substitutions. Other rule changes we don't love. Above all else, the NFL wants to make money—and the rules will favor whatever brings in the most cash. With the hip-drop change, Alex and Devon disagree significantly. Devon thinks it's unrealistic to stop players from tackling like that, and Alex thinks if you can't run through the tackle, you didn't actually have the play made. For our First Down of the week, we talk about rules that have softened the game. Think about things like the soft roughing the passer calls (08:45). Also, we both quote The Incredibles. Our Second Down covers all the ridiculous uniform rules (13:23). Did you know players are required to wear white socks from ankle to calf with team colors from calf to knee? And the fines are crazy high. We at the AD's Office want custom cleats every game. Then our Third Down hits a couple touchback rules, from kickoffs to fumbles (20:14). *Disclaimer: The new "XFL kickoff" rule hadn't been voted on when we recorded, but boy, did we anticipate it. We lament shared misery as sports fans, which... might be the definition of sports. Our Fourth Down gets to taunting and celebrations (27:40). In general, we want more—let the guys taunt. Draw a line somewhere, but let's move it a bit. Finger guns don't promote violence, Mr. Goodell. Give some of the $4m in annual fines back to the players. Finally, our Out of Bounds play of the week is 50/50 Patrick Mahomes calling Travis Kelce 'old' and Aaron Donald deciding he is old (34:37). Old, but a Hall of Famer..Thanks for joining us in the AD's Office, hosted by Alex Larsen and Devon Plecas. Each week, we'll take you through our takes on the NFL. We'll be back every week, recapping everything going on in the League that never rests. Long live football. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
