Plastic surgery is a kabillion industry. Maybe 10 billion dollars spent on the nip and the tucks. Abdominoplasty, blepharplasty, rhinoplasty – all the plasties for things that people feel aren’t where they should be.
The bigger issue to me is not the sagging noses or eyelids, hey, to each their own. My concern is not our face but our faith. When our faith is sagging that’s when we have a problem.
Over 20 years ago, shortly after I first became a Christian, I had tons of ideas for how I wanted to share the love of Jesus. I remember my mentor at the time telling me, “Never lose your zeal for Jesus, Kaʻala.”
As he said it, I thought, that’s silly. There’s nothing that’s gonna bring my fire down.
Do you know that feeling? The one where your faith is so on fire, you’re flying so high on your faith that you couldn’t possible see how you could ever come down?
But then what happens? Life happens. All the little things, the big things, they all add up and start bringing you down.
Let’s be clear: God never promised us an easier life after we became followers.
There is NO bait and switch in the gospel. All you have to do to know this is to look at the life and look at the cross of the one we follow. Did Jesus have an easy life? I don’t think so. But did he have a full and abundant life? Absolutely!
God never promised an easy life, a life where, uh, life happens.
He did promise however, to be with you ever step of the way on your life journey.
And on that journey sometimes our faith drops; it sags. It’s true.
Here are three indicators you can check to see if you need of a faith lift and three ways to get it.
First, are you discouraged? What you should check for here are signs of lost confidence or lost enthusiasm.
Is your faith a little cooler than it used to be? Do you approach God and life with a little less luster or passion? Are things kind of dull. Sometimes we get this way when we feel that we’re all alone in this thing.
If this is you, you need the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Memorize this verse:
The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deuteronomy 31:8)
That’s the first thing to check.
The second is are you feeling distressed? You know your distressed when you’re feeling extreme stress. It could be a frantic, harried kind of distress or even a heavy sorry or emotional pain. If this is you, read and memorize Philippians 4:6–7:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The third and last indicator is are you feeling dismayed? This is where you may be feeling fear, distress and discouragement all together! Maybe some panic or shock thrown in to. You’re looking at what’s in front of you and you are dismayed.
If this is you, please, please turn to the word and hide this verse in your heart:
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10)
