The Weeknd, born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, hails from Toronto, Canada. His journey to stardom is as fascinating as his music. Abel was raised by his Ethiopian immigrant mother and grandmother after his parents separated. Growing up, he was heavily influenced by the diverse musical landscape of Toronto, from hip-hop and R&B to electronic music and indie rock. These influences would later become the foundation of his unique sound.
