Listen "What is an Enrolled Agent?"
Episode Synopsis
Episode 1: In this premiere episode, we discuss how Timalyn got her start in accounting, who she is, what she does and how she can help you with your tax issues. Timalyn is America's Favorite EA. She'll explain what an EA (Enrolled Agent) is and why this designation is important for people with IRS problems. Originally from Evansville, IN, Timalyn moved to Louisville, KY and attended Bellarmine University. She studied accounting. Even as a child, she knew being an accountant was what she wanted to do as a career. She explains how a deacon in her father's church introduced her to the importance of understanding money and financial records. Tax is a specialized area of accounting. Timalyn has developed a passion for this field. She secured an internship in an accounting firm, during college. That experience helped her to learn more about taxes and tax laws. Timalyn recounts two specific situations that had a special impact on her understanding of taxes and how she could use that knowledge to help people with tax problems. There's a Difference between a CPA and an Enrolled Agent Most people don't realize that many CPAs don't do taxes. The enrolled agent license permits Timalyn to prepare tax returns, to do tax planning and her favorite role, representing consumers. It's important to understand that an enrolled agent DOES NOT work for the IRS. She works for her taxpayer clients. An enrolled agent can represent clients in all 50 states, whereas CPAs are licensed in a particular state. As an EA, she "steps into her client's shoes" and represents them in front of the IRS. She handles the records, communications, negotiations and ultimately works to secure a favorable resolution for her client. When Do People Hire an Enrolled Agent?
