Listen "#10041: Tompa's NES Predator in 13:28.968"
Episode Synopsis
Meh, not much to explain here... I'll make this a lazy submission.
Stage 1:
Green scorpions can be stepped on, which also means that you can't damage boost of them from above. The first damage boost shown thus has to be from below, but the platform isn't long enough to make an optimal damage boost, though I made it as good as possible. Other than that, it should be self-explanatory.
Stage 2: A little bit of luck manipulation done to be able to get a forward boost riding the scorpion and get a damage boost from the guerilla.
Stage 3: The last section was a bit tricky. If you get damage boosted into another enemy or projectile while the boost is active, the speed will be dropped and you'll be boosted the other way. For the first enemy, I get hit by the projectile first, which boosts me backwards into the plant to then get the forward boost. For the final damage, I just barely manage to duck and shoot the second plant before I hit it.
Stage 4: It is possible to take damage and get boosted into a wall so that you can walljump. That can be done at the very start to get through to the ending of the level instantly! However... in order to beat the stage, you have to beat the Predator and the only way to do so is with the Laser Gun that is at the bottom of the stage.
The predator fight itself is very precise. You can only damage it while it's standing up. After it jumps up, it will then curl up in midair and fall down, and you have to wait for it to land before damaging it again. In order to get a single cycle, you have to be close and time everything perfectly, then you just barely can kill the predator before it curls up. Because you need to be close, damage is unavoidable at the end. All predator fights in the Jungle Stages will be the same.
Big Mode 1: These levels are autoscrollers and are all practically identical. You are attacked by waves of bubbles, coming at you four at a time. When you destroy all four, the second wave will start. After killing a certain amount of waves, the predator will spawn after the last platform has been despawned. All there is to do is just make sure you have killed enough waves by that time and then just hit the predator as early as possible.
Stage 5: This stage has multiple exits. Each route will have the same amount of stages up to the next Big Mode, but they differ in length. I simply take the fastest option. I delayed finishing the stage in order to manipulate enemies at the start of Stage 6.
Stage 6: The idea here, I presume, is to first get the Grenades then backtrack to get the Laser, but standing on the green scorpion gets you up easily. The predator had to be manipulated to stand still longer so I had time to get close before it jumped. This will also be done in later fights.
Big Mode 2: Same as before.
Stage 8: Just lots of RNG manipulation for damage boosts. Pretty straight forward level.
Stage 9: As mentioned for Stage 4, if you take damage you can clip through walls. This allows for a nice shortcut to the end of the stage. Otherwise required to go all the way to the right to get the laser and destroy the blocks with.
Stage 10: Not really much to add here.
Big Mode 3: Same as two before.
Stage 13: I just don't understand why they put so many lasers in this stage, especially when you need to backtrack for one and there is nothing in the stage that needs it anyway? Pointless...
Stage 19: This level is a scam, as if you go higher up, you come to a dead end and need to do lots of backtracking. Most evil developers. Just stay at the bottom.
Big Mode 5: I think you get the idea.
Stage 20: Very short stage. As I always have the predator hit me, I can use the invincibility frames to jump through and on top of the enemy, using it as a platform to gain some additional frames.
Stage 24: Navigating downwards quickly is tricky, especially as turning around is very slow, did the best I could.
Stage 25: Did a little delay at the turnaround in the beginning, for RNG manipulation. The last part of the stage is just waiting for the eye-rock to slowly move to the right. Getting a nice midair damage boost to jump earlier at least.
Stage 26: Finally a use of the walljump tech! The upper route afterwards was slightly slower than to drop down
Big Mode 6: Skip, please.
Stage 27: Another hard level for luck manipulation. Tried many different methods, but couldn't line up all the strategies into one go, some frames had to be lost, they'll forever be missed :'(.
Stage 28: You are supposed to go higher up and drop down into the exit, a damage boost as you jump gives enough distance to clear the gap instead.
Stage 29: An unfortunate backtrack to the laser, Dutch needs to learn how to jump higher. Not much to add otherwise.
Stage 30: Final level! To quote the manual: "Dutch needs to destroy the Predator before the Predator destroys Dutch". The last boss is at least more interesting than previous fights. Two early shots hit as soon as it spawns, then it's a combination of when to jump and how close to the boss I can be. If closer, the shots will hit earlier so that I can shoot more, but by jumping too late/early it can reduce the amount of hits regardless. Lots of testing.
For the second phase: It can only be hit when the mouth is open. I was sadly one hit away for the last cycle, though as I can start walking just after shooting the last shot, it's not as bad.
Thanks
Thanks to Slaughterhouserock who did a "Pseudo TAS" 9 years ago that I used as a baseline and who gave me some info and feedback!
Thanks to ScarfaceNico for asking me to TAS it. Can't say if it's better or worse than Home Alone 2...
