Listen "Episode 9: The Story of Orlie Earnest Moore"
Episode Synopsis
On this episode of talking out of Harmony Matt, Jack, Dan, and John FitzGerald interview Roger Moore and Michael FitzGerald about our great, great, great uncle Orlie Earnest Moore. Since we were kids, we’ve heard stories about Orlie Earnest who served as a second division Marine during World War I. At just 19 years old Orlie was sent off to fight German forces invading France. Orlie was one of the Marines who fell during a counterattack to protect Paris near the town of Vierzy when he was killed in action on July 19th, 1918. To our family Orlie’s story symbolizes bravery, adventure, and sacrifice which is why his name is still carried on within our family to this day. A few months ago, Michael had an opportunity to travel to France to visit Orlie’s grave at the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery. After over 100 years of waiting, Michael became the first of our family to visit Orlie in his final resting place. The following conversation is our family's story. Be sure to listen to the end to hear a special song from Michael titled, "Orlie Boy." The lyrics to "Orlie Boy" and the playlist for episode 9 below.
"ORLIE BOY"
Found their bodies in the mountain;
We ran away from the fight.
I caught you in the evening,
Shivering with fright.
You said “Stay close to me brother”
We’re gonna make it through the night.
Cigarettes by the morning fire;
I’ll never turn back, though my knuckles white,
As guns rings off in the distance;
Shooting shivers down my spine.
You said “Stay close to me brother”
We’re gonna make it through the night.
In this field, I may come to rest.
God, Family, and A Soldiers Death.
I hope you died quick,
I hope you died clean;
Orlie Boy, you were only 19.
You said “Stay close to me brother”
We’re gonna make it through the night.
