Listen "Equestrian Therapy"
Episode Synopsis
🎙️ The Healing Power of Equestrian Therapy”Today, we’re stepping into a world where healing doesn’t happen in a clinic or a hospital, but side by side with a horses. We’re exploring equestrian therapy: how it transforms people, how it transforms rescue horses, and what happens inside the body and brain when we move with these incredible animals. And at the end, I’ll share details about an upcoming fundraiser.Equestrian therapy is built on a simple truth: horses respond to who we are. For rescue horses, many of whom have survived neglect or trauma, this work gives them a new purpose. They learn to trust again. They learn that humans can be safe. Their breath, their tension, their emotional state… the horse feels it all. This creates a partnership where both beings learn to regulate, to connect, and to move forward together. How Riding Affects the Cardiovascular System When a rider moves with a horse, something remarkable happens. The horse’s gait naturally mimics the rhythm of human walking. As the horse moves, the rider’s core, hips, and spine respond in a constant, subtle workout. This gentle motion increases heart rate, improves circulation, and activates the parasympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for calming the body. And for the horse? Movement increases their cardiovascular fitness too. Rescue horses who may have been sedentary or under‑conditioned begin to rebuild strength, stamina, and healthy muscle tone. It’s a workout for both—but one rooted in connection rather than effort. What Happens in the Brain Riding and interacting with horses stimulates the brain in powerful ways. The rhythmic movement of the horse activates the vestibular system, which helps regulate balance and emotional stability. The brain releases oxytocin, the bonding hormone, and endorphins, the natural mood lifters. At the same time, the prefrontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for focus, decision‑making, and emotional regulation—lights up. This combination helps quiet the stress response and builds new neural pathways that support calm, confidence, and resilience.Muscle Memory, Stress Patterns, and Breathwork Many people carry stress in their bodies without even realizing it. Shoulders tighten. Breath shortens. The nervous system stays on alert. Horses can feel this. When a rider tenses, the horse may hesitate, possibly not understanding your emotions. When the rider breathes and is relaxed, the horse feels your calm. Over time, the body learns a new pattern:Relax the shouldersCalm the breathInstead of against the tension, move with the horse This creates new muscle memory—one that can interrupt old stress responses and replaces them with grounded, embodied calm. It’s therapy your body can feel, not just think about. One of the most empowering parts of equestrian therapy is setting goals with the horse you are riding. Maybe the goal is to go get your horse and tack it with confidence. Maybe it’s to jump on the horse bareback first time. Maybe it’s simply to lope a full lap while staying present and breathing smoothly. Horses don’t judge the size of the goal—they respond to the intention behind it. Each small success builds trust, self‑esteem, and a sense of partnership that carries into everyday life. Before we wrap up, I want to share something special. At the end of January—weather permitting—New Branch Ranch will be hosting a fundraiser to support their equestrian therapy programs and the rescue horses who make this work possible. It’s a chance to meet the horses, learn more about the therapy process, and support a mission that changes lives on both ends of the lead rope. If you’ve ever wanted to see equestrian therapy in action, this is the moment.Thank you for joining me today. Equestrian therapy is more than riding—it’s connection, healing, and growth for both horse and human. Until next time, breathe deeply, move gently, and remember: healing often begins when we let another being walk beside us.
