KEY TAKEAWAYS
My good friend Dave and his five-year-old son Max came to Spain to ski. The resort is an hour away from where I live, so they came to stay with me. Now they’ve left I’m left with a little bit of an empty feeling. It’s not a bad feeling, but it is a feeling, and we really have to use our feelings as a compass. In this case, they’ve left a void and I miss them, but I love the lifestyle that I lead, that’s what the move was all about in the first place.
We’re really lucky with technology, you can reach out to those friends and family that aren’t near and you can still spend time with them. But of course it’s not the same as spending time with them in person.
If there’s a void you need to fill, don’t just acknowledge it, take action. How do you fill that void? In this case, it’s incumbent on me to find a local community or group of people that I enjoy spending time with, and I have done that. But, it would be healthy for me to find people I really resonate with and have conversations about anything: deep conversations, conversations about sweet nothings. There’s an app called MeetUp that’s global and I suggest downloading it, there’s all sorts of things on there – sport, language exchanges, mindset stuff.
I’m looking for deep connections. I find shallow connections unfulfilling. I wouldn’t say they’re a waste of my time, it’s a way to fill the void, but how do you create better relationships? Trying to grow the relationships you already have but perhaps aren’t as progressed as the ones where you just meet people for a night out. I think the pandemic has suffocated us in that way and the greatest effect of all of this will be on our mental health. Perhaps you feel more awkward now in social situations. You can deal with that by simply moving from a conversation you’re not enjoying to another one.
BEST MOMENTS‘When you have great friends that you’ve known for 20-30 years it makes it tough to live abroad.’‘I watched the Man United game with my Dad over facetime. While he was watching the game my whole family had dinner and I felt like I was there with them, and it was a really joyous feeling.’‘Just put yourself more out there in whatever capacity that may be.’‘How can we create better conversations in our lives? We have to be courageous and vulnerable and willing to put ourselves out there. Just take it one little step at a time: Smile and say hello to people and slowly increase your interactions with them.’
ABOUT THE HOSTGavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.
