Listen "Sporting Teams That No Longer Exist "Bitten the Dust"."
Episode Synopsis
Paul and Glenn are back for another entertaining, action-packed episode. This week, we will discuss some former sporting teams that no longer exist, “have bitten the dust”. Some are well-known, some not so well-known. Some of what we will discuss in this episode include:
- An Australian city that is the sixth biggest in the country, however, has gained the unfortunate reputation as a “sporting graveyard”, when it comes to its national professional sporting teams.
- An American city with a proud sports history that once had a team called The Oilers and The Aeros and is known for its Space Centre and a well-known quote from a past voyage to the Moon.
- Former Rugby League teams e.g., Balmain, Glebe, Valleys, Brothers.
- Former Aussie Rules teams e.g., Fitzroy, University.
- Former Super Rugby teams e.g., Sun wolves, Jaguars.
- Why many sporting teams “bite the dust”, e.g., financial difficulties, poor crowds.
- The large number of former NBL basketball teams that have folded in the past four decades e.g., Canberra Cannons, West Sydney Razorbacks.
- Teams from the Super League era, that went in a “flash”, e.g., Adelaide Rams, Western Reds, Hunter Mariners.
- The large number of American professional sports franchises that change cities or close their operations.
- The top five American cities that have lost professional sports teams e.g., Detroit, St Louis.
- Why owners of American sporting franchises move teams e.g., seek greater profits, better facilities.
Paul and Glenn give their Claps and Slaps for the week. Miss Olivia drops by to do the Quiz and What Am I? segments. We also have our segment Where is it Now? and Glenn finishes off the show with another cracking joke.
