Listen "Olympic Sports That Were Given The Flick and the Paris Olympics."
Episode Synopsis
Paul and Glenn are back for another action-packed, fun episode. With the 2024 Paris Olympics now only days away, we look back on some of the sports that once surprisingly appeared at the Olympics and were given the “flick”. We also look back on the past two Olympic Games held in Paris, the “City of Love”, in 1900 and 1924. Some of what will be discussed include:
- The bizarre 1900 Olympics that featured many unusual events and seemed to go on forever.
- The 1924 Olympics and the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire”, which depicted two British runners in their quest for Olympic Gold.
- Former gymnastic events eg, club swinging.
- Sports we believe that are on the schedule today and should be given the “flick”, eg, synchronised swimming.
- Demonstrations sports at the Olympics eg, Aussie Rules football.
- Standing long jump, rope climbing, rackets and rogue.
- Former shooting events eg, duelling pistol, live pidgeon shooting, running deer shooting.
- Polo, plunge for distance
- A former Olympic event that was held between 1900-1924 which began as a rural pastime in England and Scotland and involves the use of a long, strong rope.
We have our Claps and Slaps for the week. Miss Olivia drops by to conduct the Quiz and the What Am I? segments. We have our Where is it Now? segment and Glenn finishes off the show with another one of his cracking jokes.
