On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul and Rebecca Wheele are joined by Rubria Mendoza to talk about the fascinating topic of family matters and why family is important.

Family is important for me because it’s the centre of everything we do. Their values, support and the dynamic bonds that are created can be transposed to any other area of our lives: work, friends, etc.
For me, family isn’t just blood relatives, family are people I have a strong connection with. I’m not blood related to my second Mum, yet we are equally close as I was with my Mum. I have a strong group of friends who I met 20+ years ago, we call ourselves family. When we had kids they refer to us all as uncles and aunts because that’s how we feel that connection. 
One of the greatest things about family is that we don’t have to agree on everything. Even though we were raised the same way we are unique. When I’ve gone through bad times with family members, something I learned years ago when attending support groups is that I don’t want to stop loving the person, but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with their actions. I don’t like their actions but I still love the person. I don’t get stuck, I try to move forward, even if the relationship doesn’t go back to what it was. It can be really hurtful, but I don’t have to carry those things with me.
My group of people share the same values, that we are honest with ourselves and willing to be open, even if we don’t talk much or see each other in person, we still feel the connection. That, for me, has been amazing. We’re all human beings, there to support each other, cheer for the others, and help. That’s what family is about.
