Genesis 34 is a tale of vengeance and bloodshed. Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, is violated by Prince Shechem. Her brothers, Simeon and Levi, are furious and seek to avenge their sister’s honor. They hatch a devious plan to exact their revenge. They convince the prince and his people to undergo circumcision, and while they are still recovering, Simeon and Levi launch a surprise attack on the city and obliterate all the males. They rescue Dinah from Shechem’s house and take her home. Jacob’s other sons plunder the city, taking captive the wives and children. The brothers justify their actions by claiming that Dinah must not be treated dishonorably. However, Jacob sees that their vengeful way of seeking justice has endangered his family’s security in their new home. This story is a gripping account of the lengths people will go to protect their loved ones and their honor.
