How can people be lost who have never heard about Jesus? The Bible addresses this question in Romans Chapter 2:12-16 by telling us that people will be judged based on what they know about God through creation and their conscience.  They won't be judged for rejecting Christ when they've never heard of him but they still face the judgment of the One who made them.
