Listen "Episode 4: The Mystery of Edwin Drood - Chapter 4"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, we turn to Chapter 4 of Charles Dickens’ The Mystery of Edwin Drood and meet one of Cloisterham’s most pompous figures: Mr. Thomas Sapsea, the self-important auctioneer. Recently widowed, Sapsea takes great pride in the lofty epitaph he’s written for his late wife—and even more pride in himself. When he shares his work with John Jasper, Edwin Drood’s enigmatic uncle, flattery cements their budding friendship. Along the way, we glimpse Cloisterham’s small-town vanity, hear whispers of Edwin and Rosa’s engagement, and meet the curious stonemason Durdles. Through humor and satire, Dickens paints a vivid picture of a town full of inflated egos and hidden tensions, setting the stage for the mysteries yet to come.
