From the start of planting, the first thing I did every morning was run to the garden to see how the vegetables had grown overnight, how long it took them to flower and bear fruit, and which plants needed watering and fertilizing. The vegetable garden gradually became the liveliest part of my home.
At first, I planted mostly tomatoes and peppers, buying over ten varieties of each. However, due to too much rain this year and my lack of experience, none of the tomatoes survived. The peppers, on the other hand, flourished, producing crop after crop. The eggplants yielded only a few fruits because I didn't fertilize them properly.
For leafy greens, I planted spinach, celery, cilantro, butter lettuce, baby bok choy, and lettuce leaf. These are all vegetables I love to eat. They sprouted quickly and were quite successful. But, of course... I was still too inexperienced... Snails also loved them. Before I learned how to deal with the snails, I watched them munch away at my fresh, green vegetables every day until they were all but gone. The snails grew to the size of a fist... In the end, only the water spinach, sweet potato leaves, and pumpkin were left—vegetables the snails didn't like. Next spring, I really need to prepare for a battle against them.
Recently, to prevent snails from stealing my crops, I set up a large table and started growing cherry radishes, carrots, and lots of scallions, mint, and cilantro in pots. They all grew beautifully. With the comfortable light and temperature in early autumn, it’s the perfect season for planting again. It’s time to give the garden some good care.
