Listen "33. Navigating the Emotional Journey of Long-Term Care with Deborah Bakti"

Episode Synopsis

Transitioning a loved one into long term care can be an emotional journey. In addition to the challenges faced with navigating long term care itself, it can be tough to navigate emotions such as grief and guilt that commonly show up when placing a loved one in long term care.
Listen in on this conversation between your host, Brenda Jasmin, and Deborah Bakti, author of the book, “Now What? Managing the Emotional Journey of Long Term Care for Families”,  as they discuss how to manage the life-changing experience of placing a loved one in long term care, and transitioning into the role of being a “resident’s family member”.
Deborah Bakti has a unique understanding of both sides of long term care because not only has she worked as an executive in the seniors’ care sector, her husband, Ty, was admitted to long term care while in his early 60’s, and both her parents were residents in seniors’ care. Her perspective of having industry insight, as well as her personal experiences as a resident’s wife and daughter give her a vantage point that can benefit others who are embarking on this journey.
Here are some of the topics we discuss:

Coping with emotional stress when transitioning a loved one into long term care.
Understanding your changing role in supporting a loved one in long-term care.
Admission anxiety: the three gaps that show up when admitting a loved one into long term care and how to close these gaps.
Getting yourself informed and educated as you navigate this journey.
Navigating common emotions such as grief and guilt.
Educating yourself about options and having conversations early with aging loved ones about long-term care before it’s needed.
