One Disease is a non-profit organisation with a core mission of eliminating Crusted Scabies as a public health concern in the Northern Territory. Scabies underlies many skin infections in the NT’s remote indigenous communities. These infections can in turn lead to sepsis, Acute Rheumatic Fever, Rheumatic Heart Disease, and chronic kidney disease This Podcast series - ‘Scratching the Surface - the Scabies Story’ is part of One Disease’s commitment to provide Scabies and Crusted Scabies education to health services in both remote communities and urban settings. In this episode our guest is Norma Benger-Hayes, a Marrathiel woman from the Daly River region. Norma has a long history in Indigenous health, including 15 years at Menzies School of Health Research. It was during a scabies eradication day in an Arnhemland community that Norma discovered she had a ‘super power’ – the ability to see scabies mites with the naked eye!
