Episode Synopsis

In Say No to Lashon Hara Day 9, the Chafetz Chaim discusses the various sins and prohibitions associated with speaking lashon hara. People often underestimate the number of sins committed when they speak lashon hara, and recognizing the magnitude of these sins can help individuals understand the importance of controlling their speech. The Chafetz Chaim uses an analogy of warning signs to illustrate the dangerous nature of lashon hara. Just as a factory producing poison has numerous signs indicating the severity of the risks involved, lashon hara is similarly dangerous, as it has the potential to destroy relationships, bring exile, and harm one's connection with Hashem. To emphasize the severity, Hashem multiplied the commandments against lashon hara to seventeen. The first and most obvious commandment is to refrain from peddling information, which involves collecting and selling gossip about others. The Chafetz Chaim explains that the common case of lashon hara is when someone tells another person what was said about them, thinking they are being helpful. However, this often leads to bitterness and animosity, causing strife and conflict. The Torah instructs us to stop engaging in this behavior. The Chafetz Chaim emphasizes that regardless of whether the information is true, sharing it is still lashon hara. The harm caused by lashon hara far outweighs any perceived benefits, and the fire of its consequences can quickly spiral out of control.
