Listen "4-3-23: Reconstructing an elbow and a career"
Episode Synopsis
I would love to hear from you, just send me text and let me know what you think of the podcast. This week I am talking about inspiring comeback stories, and I thought that I would highlight baseball comebacks in honor of the season just getting started. Today is all about Tommy John. Yes if you didn’t know Tommy John was an actual pitcher, not just the name of a surgery, and he was a phenomenal pitcher to boot. He pitched for 26 seasons, 14 of which came after his groundbreaking elbow ligament replacement surgery in 1974. He went to three All-Star games and won 20 games three times after his surgery, all adding up to a career with 288 wins. If he hadn’t worked so hard and bounced back so well from the surgery, who knows if it would have continued or just been chalked up as a failed experiment. Instead, because of his grit and determination (and a great surgeon) countless pitchers since have had amazing and prolonged careers due to Tommy John surgery.
