How do you respond to the terror of the night when you are overwhelmed by feelings of loneliness and fear?  Jacob is the Patriarch who foreshadows the exile.  Jacob teaches us how to respond to the terror of the night.    When Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming, he also saw the persecutions of his future generations. Indeed, the Torah is a blueprint of the future.

[Genesis 33:1 RSV] "1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids."
