Episode Synopsis

Welcome Back to Nuanced Beauty!

TODAY'S EPISODE
Recently a popular country song from 2010 called If I Die Young by the Band Perry got a remake into part 2. Bill heard the remake that takes a twist on the first release, which is focused on the romanticization of dying at a young age, and in part 2, she shares a sense of gratitude that she didn’t die young, sharing the joy of love and having a daughter, and a sense of maturity in the line “now I know that there’s never enough time.” It’s a beautiful song that led us to a conversation of how we have viewed death, popular thoughts on death in culture, and where our perspective has changed over time. We also take a moment to discuss this idea of orientation to time that’s taught by some enneagram instructors, where essentially some folks tend to “live” today with a lense focused on the past, some in the present, and some in the future. We’ve reflected on this concept ourselves and have found that Bill tends to look back and I tend to look ahead. We mentioned wills and trusts, and how our parents and our kids may have processed death from a couple quick stories.
