TODAY'S EPISODE
We recorded this episode a couple weeks ago and I went back and forth on if and when to publish it. It's an entertaining topic that catches my eye, but I think we, Bill and I, tend to see this one pretty similarly. We are not a fan of these catch phrases: "If momma ain't happy, no one is happy" or "Happy wife. Happy life."
I am sure they are often said in a gentle chiding manner, and meant to make light of life's challenges, but the messaging here doesn't support unity in a household. While said in humor, I think there's a deeper expectation in a household for the wife to do everything, and the husband to be perceived as incompetent. Bill shares many sitcom examples where this has humorously played out and set the stage for what we think a home is supposed to look like.
Then for me, I think as the wife and mom, I would rather someone challenge me to do better and not be so proud of everything I'm doing at the expense of others around me in the house. Because when the stress elevates, the household definitely feels my stress. And I don't want to find myself in a rut of thinking everything rests on my shoulders and I can do it all myself. I don't think this is true or wise and it's in the subtle messaging that we wear down our marriage and home.
