Listen "51. Interview w/ Jennifer @ Sweet Grass Essentials: Semi-homestead kind of life? "
Episode Synopsis
Welcome Back to Nuanced Beauty!
INTERVIEW EPISODE
Jennifer is the owner of Sweet Grass Essentials and a fellow classmate from the US Merchant Marine Academy. We sat down today to discuss homesteading, or her small farm, and her business, the products she is selling and what she hopes to offer in the future.
We discuss the growing trend of people dabbling in gardening and getting back to the basics with foods, health routines, and thinking for
themselves. It’s an exciting movement! We discuss the nuance of semi-homesteading versus a full-out homestead. Isn’t it nice to be able to head
to a store and buy things? We talk about milling bread and leveling up your routine as you explore
“That’s just what I’ve been doing with this semi-homestead type life is, when I start getting comfortable, now I add an extra layer”
–Jennifer from Sweet Grass Essentials
Jennifer shares growing up in rural Ohio and having to do a tremendous amount of weeding in their family vegetable garden. Fast-forward to moving away for college, and her ambitions shifted to seeing the city life as where it’s at. …Then, she got married, and found her and her husband embracing both of their upbringings by wanting to own a home on a piece of land. A couple homes into marriage, they landed at their current location, and began their journey with a couple of cows. Then came the chickens, and the garden, and the adventure continues.
Next we dive into raising cattle. In the spirit of nuance, I ask Jennifer why her family is comfortable raising and eating their cattle. We both share our appreciation for eating meat and the effort it takes to produce food to sustain our lives. Jennifer shares how they strive to make the most humane and ethical decisions with raising their cattle.
Tune in to hear the rest.
