Define debate

noun

a discussion, as of a public question in an assembly, involving opposing viewpoints:
a formal contest in which the affirmative and negative sides of a proposition are advocated by opposing speakers.

to engage in argument or discussion, as in a legislative or public assembly:

Debate seen today isn’t team debate
Political debate is for the purpose of winning as an individual
Debate competition is for the purpose of winning as an individual
Team debate is for the purpose of a win for the product, solution, or customer - not the person or even the team
Team debate is discussion, argument, even conflict associated with an effort to find the best possible solution, product, or serve the customer best.


Unhealthy

No debate
No passion among team members
No disagreements
No sense of obligation to contribute
Everything is taken personally




Importance of healthy debate

Best for the product, solution, customer
Not about who is right and who is wrong
Feels like conflict or argument
Team trust eliminates the personal feelings
Ensure team is working effectively


How to begin building healthy debate

Start with acknowledgment & explanation

“We don’t debate enough & therefore our products and customers suffer for it.”
Explain the purpose & need for debate
Betterment of the product, solution, or service to the customer
Acknowledge the awkwardness of debate


Intentionally ask for input regularly

Call out introverts by name


Highlight & give permission for debate when it happens

“Hey, I just want to point out that what you’re doing right now is healthy debate. It may feel heated or confrontational, but it’s good for our customers. Please continue…”
