Revelation 2:8-11
Smyrna means crushed. It has the same roots as Myrrh, which is an embalming plant. It had to be crushed in order to emit its sweet fragrance. The age this church represents is from 100-300 AD and was the time of persecuted church. During these two centuries much of the church was hated, outlawed, and persecuted.
