Stephanie Big-Eagle is a descendant of the Oceti Sakowin (father), and of the Nordic, Irish, and Haudenosaunee Confederacy (mother).

She has been an Indigenous and environmental activist since 2007 and participated in the student and elder occupation of D-Q University from 2008 – 2009, the Return of the Ancestors Gathering in 2009, the Standing Rock Movement from 2016 – 2017, the Native Nations Rise March in 2017, the Fort Laramie Treaty Ride in 2018.

Stephanie is educated in the traditional technique of hand poke tattoo and created her first tattoo design, the Standing Rock Tattoo which became a symbol for the water protectors of the Standing Rock Movement against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

She is now a full-time traditional hand poke tattoo artist. She is also an Azteka and contemporary free-form dancer, a musician, singer, and song-writer.

In 2019, she released her memoir, Thunderbird Rising, a story of her path to reconnection, empowerment, and resilience.
