On the 9 August 2024 Rights, Rorts and Rants show Ann-Maree McEwan interviews Natasha Flores, an Industrial Officer for Unions NSW specialising in Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) and Workers Compensation about tougher industrial manslaughter laws recently passed in NSW.
The Work Health and Safety Amendment (Industrial Manslaughter) Act 2024 No 43 was passed on 24 June 2024 to create an offence of industrial manslaughter in NSW.
In the podcast Natasha explains the background to the amendments, outlines penalties of up to $20 million dollar fines and imprisonmnet for up to 25 years and clarifies what Parliament and unions hope to achieve by the WHS amendment.
Among advocates for the new legislation were Rob and Patricia Cassaniti who's son Christopher died on a construction site. The family featured in Lethal Bias a documentary released in 2022 about bias in the construction industry against unions and workers which was responsible for putting workers at risk.
