Listen "WIGIAT"
Episode Synopsis
A Sermon from Genesis 28:10-22.
This sermon was entitled "WIGIAT." You might notice that I forgot to tie that together with what I was saying to you about Jacob's dream and his marking the holy place with a rock. Such is the risk of preaching without notes. WIGIAT is an acronym fashioned by my pastoral care professor Dr. Tony Everette. It stands for "Where is God in all this?" This is the challenge we have as people of faith, recognizing where God is at work in our lives and the lives of others so that we might mark those places and relationships as holy, especially when they mark such a significant transformation as occurred in Jacob's life. That is why you were given your own rock and sent out to expect and to look for God's presence. Now you know why the title in your bulletin was "WIGIAT." If you weren't with us Sunday and you would like your own rock, which was prayed over by the children and me, just let us know. We'll be glad to send you one so that you can mark that holy place where God met you. Sunday afternoon I visited the lot where the sanctuary of Main Street United Methodist Church used to stand. It was completely burned and then demolished. The church was located on the property currently occupied by Pilgrim's Inn. I placed a rock on the ground that would have been right below where I was sitting when I was 17 years old and God spoke to me, calling me into ministry. That is a holy place for me where I too felt like Jacob felt when he exclaimed, "Surely the LORD is in this place-- and I did not know it!" God bless you as you seek God's presence this week. -- Pastor David.
