Listen "Prediabetic vs. Type 2 Diabetes"
Episode Synopsis
The term Pre Diabetic really bugs me the first time I heard it because I am absolutely involved in caring the Type 2 diabetic but then some people just say “I am or I was a pre diabetic that sounds like a champ”.Well then what’s the difference?Diagnosing Type 2 Diabetes includes a thorough clinical assessment by your health care provider considering your medical history, family history of diabetes, any risk factors you may have and they will also ask about symptoms you may be experiencing, such as increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, cravings and unexplained weight loss. In addition to that, they require you some blood tests like FASTING BLOOD SUGAR, HBA1C, and Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). If your results are on the criteria of being diabetic type 2 they might look for further investigation and sometimes they will take the blood tests again at least 2 separate takings.
I got this from American Diabetes Association. (2021). Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes—2021.Now..Type 2 diabetes is typically diagnosed based on the following criteria:
1. Fasting Blood Glucose Test: A fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate occasions is diagnostic of type 2 diabetes.Prediabetes is often defined as having a fasting blood glucose level between 100 and 125 mg/dL.
2. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):You will be ask to fast overnight, and then a fasting blood glucose level will be measured. You’ll be ask to consume a sugary solution, typically containing 75 grams of glucose. Then, blood samples are taken at intervals (usually 1-2 hours) after drinking the solution to see how your body processes glucose.A blood glucose level of 200 mg/dL or higher 2 hours after consuming a glucose solution confirms the diagnosis.Prediabetes may also be diagnosed if the blood glucose level 2 hours after consuming a glucose solution falls between 140 and 199 mg/dL.
3. Hemoglobin A1c Test: An HbA1c level of 6.5% or higher is used to diagnose type 2 diabetes. An HbA1c level between 5.7% and 6.4% is commonly used to diagnose prediabetes. These diagnostic criteria may vary slightly among different organizations and guidelines, but the references provided are based on the American Diabetes Association's standards.
