Listen "The Upward Path"
Episode Synopsis
Deep Dive into Cornerstone by Jeremy Prayer - The Upward PathAt the core of understanding sin and spiritual growth is the human heart, which is described as deceitful. The heart is the root from which outward behavior, or "fruit," stems. Instead of just focusing on changing bad behavior, biblical understanding requires looking inward to the heart's condition.A key issue in the heart is the presence of idols. These are defined as anything or anyone that captures our hearts, minds, and affections more than God. Idols represent what we deeply want and what we might sin to get or if we don't get. Life's circumstances, called "the heat," act as pressure that squeezes the heart, revealing these underlying idols and producing either good or bad fruit.Biblical repentance is fundamentally a turning towards God, not merely stopping bad deeds or starting good ones. It involves confessing the sin rooted in the heart and turning away from idols and self-focus. The good deeds that follow are seen as the evidence of a heart that has already turned to God.A significant manifestation of heart idols is the sinful fear of man. This is a focus on self rather than God, valuing what others think, need, or can do more than God's opinion and power. It stands in stark contrast to the righteous fear of the Lord, which is a reverent awe and worship of God, prioritizing His will above all else. The central calling for believers is to strive to please God in all aspects of life, rather than pleasing self or man. This involves denying self, intentional obedience to God's word, and cultivating a heart fully dependent on Him. This process of identifying sin, confessing it, repenting, and resetting priorities to align with God constitutes the "upward path" of spiritual growth.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
