Listen "Study in Revelation #41"
Episode Synopsis
The sermon interprets Revelation 8:7 as a prophetic depiction of Christ's judgment upon the Western professing Christian Roman Empire, initiated immediately after the death of Emperor Theodosius I in 395 AD, marking the end of the sixth seal and the beginning of the seventh. The first trumpet's symbolic hail, fire, and blood—echoing the plagues of Egypt and Old Testament judgments—represent both literal barbarian invasions, such as those by Alaric the Visigoth, and a spiritual judgment on the church's corruption, particularly its perversion of Christ's unique mediatorial role through the veneration of saints and images. The destruction of one-third of the trees and grass symbolizes the devastation of both physical and spiritual life, with trees representing rulers and the proud, and grass symbolizing common people, all under divine judgment for apostasy. The passage underscores that nations and churches, having received divine truth, are accountable to God and will face righteous judgment when they distort His revelation, especially by elevating human mediators above Christ. Ultimately, the sermon calls for national and personal repentance, urging hearts to be transformed by the gospel so that Jesus Christ may be acknowledged as King, His law as supreme, and His kingdom established in both individual lives and civil institutions.
