The theology of federal headship explains how it is possible for Jesus to take your place on the cross. All of humanity is conceived under the kingdom of Adam, which is ruled by sin and death. This is possible because Adam, being the best of us, held a unique position as a representative of the human race. The failure of Adam's sin cascades throughout time affecting and infecting everyone born since our first parents...which is all of us. While this theological principle might seem unfair (that Adam represented you and failed on your behalf) it sets up a precedence for Jesus to hold a unique position of federal headship as well. Jesus unfairly represented you and succeeded on your behalf making it possible for you to be born again under His kingdom, which is ruled by grace. You don't have a choice as to whether or not Adam represented you, but you do have a choice to remain under his headship or to be saved from sin and death by being transferred to the "kingdom of the Son of His love." Choose life!
