For many Christians developing in their faith consists of practicing some self-control, having some general affection for others, and maybe even stepping into the arena of serving occasionally. God challenges our notions of what true spiritual maturity looks like by taking us into the deeper waters of self-denial for the purpose of loving others. Denying self finds is rightful place in spiritual maturity when Jesus finds His right place in our lives. The only way that self-denial is an act of service and love toward others is when Jesus is our motivation. It must be Jesus’s love for others and Jesus’s soon return that drives our self-denial, or we just go through the motions of another religious exercise and self-denial becomes another means of self-serving. The abundant, rich, satisfying life you are hoping fore is only available in Jesus…will you trust Him for it?
