God’s name is much more than a series of sounds strung together as an identification marker. This third commandment targets the importance of how God’s people represent Him in the way they relate to His name. We will either gloriously exalt the Lord or shamefully dishonor Him. God has no equal and is only rightly compared to Himself. He relies on nothing for life or existence, and is not held back by any human limitations. Will you hallow the name of God, or take it in vain? The only right thing for us to do is glorify the name of the Lord.
