Listen "This is Not What I Wanted"
Episode Synopsis
“I didn’t want that.”It is tough enough when God answers our prays by saying, “no.” That was the focus of last week’s sermon. What about when God actually gives us things, circumstances, even relationships that we really don’t want? What is the return policy on God’s providence? If you have ever felt like God gave you something you did not want, even something you absolutely dreaded, well, you are in good company. Jesus knows what it is like to receive from God that which he dreaded the most. Read and pray through Matthew 26:36-46. Try to image what Jesus is experiencing, the dreadful tension between God’s will and what we want. Advent is about longing and waiting for what we want. However, God often answers our longings with what we don’t want. In our passage this Sunday, Jesus shows us how, better yet empowers us, to accept this dreadful providence. The late Dallas Willard said in a lecture a few years ago, “We are meant to live a dramatic life full of good feeling and we do that if we are caught up in the drama of redemption and creative work under God.” Always on the pathway of being caught up in this drama of redemption and creative work are whole seasons of getting what we don’t want from the very hand of our loving God. Yet he knows what he is doing. We can trust him. Jesus shows us the way and carries us in it.Pastor David
