Prayer can seem impossible.Most struggle with deepening, or even beginning, their life of prayer. There are of course many reasons for this. However, Paul Miller, in his book The Praying Life shines a spotlight on what he sees as one of our chief obstacles to prayer:“One of the subtlest hindrances to prayer is probably the most pervasive. In the broader culture and in our churches, we prize intellect, competency, and wealth. Because we can do life without God, praying seems nice but unnecessary. Money can do what prayer does, and it is quicker and less time-consuming. Our trust in ourselves and in our talents makes us structurally independent of God. As a result, exhortations to pray don’t stick.”Jesus tackles this exact issue in Luke 11:3-4. Jesus teaches us how to make impossible prayer possible, and not just possible but liberating and life-giving. This weekend read slowly and meditate on Luke 11:2-4.
