Listen "Suit Up and Show Up: Participate in Life Enthusiastically"
Episode Synopsis
Before my medical retirement, I was a Marketing Director for a super groovy company. I was heartbroken to walk away due to my disability. One of the things I loved most about my job was inspiring others to take pride in their work and feel good about where they worked. In a way, I was helping people see the best in themselves. After all, if you can’t enjoy your time at work, how can you create a positive experience for customers?
Every day starts the same—I suit up and show up. That means opening my eyes and ignoring that annoying inner voice saying, “You don’t want to get up. Stay under the covers where its warm.” Before she finishes, I swing my feet off the bed and stand up. This is my first “next right thing” every day. I don’t have to like it—I just have to do it.
When my kids were little, I’d tell them, “You don’t have to like your vegetables; you just have to eat them. Imagine if I made you like them too—that would be really hard!” Eventually, they liked some of those vegetables. The same goes for life: when we do the next right thing, enthusiasm often follows. Take each action one at a time and do it whether you want to or not.
That is suiting up and showing up: participating in life and moving toward enthusiasm.
