Episode Synopsis

My daughter and I had the chance to go on a European vacation through a high school program about five years ago. Halfway through the trip, she looked at me and said, “You are the happiest person on this trip.” My response was, “Because I'm sober.” Without a wine glass glued to my hand, I feel a natural optimism—like my default outlook on life has a rosy tint.
You know how a baby animal watches its parents to learn how to navigate the world? In that same way, I’ve learned to embrace a more positive, grateful perspective by surrounding myself with like-minded people. By observing the gratitude and resilience in others in my fellowship, I’ve been able to cultivate those qualities within myself.
I love not drinking. For those who knew me all the way back in college, you know that I was once totally in love with drinking. Now, being totally in love with life itself is such a bizarre yet beautiful place to be. I share my journey because I want others to know that this kind of change is possible.
For a long time, I hesitated to be so open about my life and recovery. But after losing another friend to my disease, I feel like I can’t keep this to myself anymore. There’s so much hope to be found, and I want others suffering like I did to know it’s possible.
