Listen "No Ifs, Ands, or Buts: Alcoholism Is Unconditional"
Episode Synopsis
“If you had my life, you’d drink too.” Before I was willing to admit I was an alcoholic, I believed this statement wholeheartedly.
In early recovery, I was searching for a loophole: if something terrible happens, I’ll drink. I made my sobriety conditional on the circumstances of my life. But as I gain more tools to navigate life when it gets "lifey," my sobriety becomes less dependent on people, places, and things.
I stay sober to be well—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. That wellness cannot be conditional. Recognizing that my alcoholism is a disease, not a matter of self-indulgence, was a critical step in removing “ifs, ands, or buts” from my mindset. My sobriety demands faith that I will not pick up a drink, no matter what.
