Listen "Keep Coming Back: Finding Ourselves In Others"
Episode Synopsis
When I stopped drinking, I didn't see the wreckage that had brought other suffering alcoholics to the same place. It was hard to believe these people had the same fear, DUIs, suicide attempts, shame, bad hygiene, and broken relationships that I did when I showed up. I wasn't convinced that anyone understood me, but gratefully I kept coming back. That act of returning again and again, provided me with exposure to people choosing life over death. Often the first step on the path of happiness and healing doesn’t feel good.Through steady exposure I began to hear my own story in theirs. I saw that my drinking was walking down the path of slow suicide. I’m grateful for that little spark of willingness that has never burned out for me. My willingness is the kind that doesn’t roar but whispers: do the next right thing. I found myself through listening to the experience of others.
