Listen "Feelings Aren’t Facts: Balancing Emotion and Reality"
Episode Synopsis
This morning, I heard the phrase“feelings aren’t facts” and immediately bristled. I’ve always dismissed this phrase because it felt like saying my emotions didn’t matter. Feelings are real and valid, but they aren’t always accurate representations of reality; and this is what the phrase means. If I’m feeling something so deeply, how can it not be real? This phrase tells me to recognize my feelings and use them as a signal. What is my feeling trying to tell me? Is my perception of a situation clouded by fear or past trauma? Is invalidation of my emotions in the past making me defensive about my emotions today?Recovery encourages me to balance emotional awareness with logic. And that’s a bitch! It really is. Using my emotions as data collection for self-awareness rather than evidence for reality can be done with some grounding techniques. My feelings are valid, but they aren’t always rational, and learning to separate the two has been one of the biggest lessons in my recovery. It all starts with a pause, checking in, and asking myself, “What else could be true here?” Listen and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and YouTube.
