Vinisha Umashankar is a Grade IX student, who lives in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India. She is the recipient of Children’s Climate Prize 2020 for her innovation, the Solar Ironing Cart. The prize was awarded by the Children's Climate Foundation, Stockholm, Sweden. It is awarded to students, who have taken extraordinary actions for the environment, climate and clean air. She was the recipient of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award in 2019 for her innovation, the Solar Ironing Cart. The award was given by National Innovation Foundation, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. She was the youngest recipient of Dr. Pradeep P. Thevannoor Innovation Award in 2019 for her innovation, the Smart Ceiling Fan. The award was given by the SCMS School of Engineering and Technology, Ernakulam, Kerala in association with Kerala Startup Mission. She has now been shortlisted for the Prime Minister of India’s Rashtriya Bal Shakti Puraskar 2021, the highest civilian award in India for students under the age of 18. She excels in both academics as well as co-curricular activities. Reading books is her favourite hobby. She likes to read the old classics, history, mystery, reference, science and technology books. She has won many elocutions, quiz, essay writing, drawing, singing, dancing and yoga competitions. She can play the electronic keyboard, ride a bicycle, do gymnastics and swim. She is learning to cook too! She likes to make pancakes and cheese toast. She loves countryside, trees, animals, birds and butterflies. She advocates everyone to grow at least a tree. Her favourite quote is “Don't watch the clock, do what it does. Keep Going” of Sam Levenson.
