Listen "The Theology of Nonsense"
Episode Synopsis
Send us a textMost theology is nonsense. The sooner you realize this, the sooner you will become a better person and a better Christian. But that's not to say that theology is not important. Musing about God and belief is essential to a healthy spiritual life. In one of Wayne Grudem’s more honest moments he said systematic theology can just be an exercise in self-gratification. I don’t think he meant it like I took it, because he spent his career molding historical theology to support his fundamentalist worldview. He calls it classical theology. I call it building castles in the air. The more you study theology the more you see how it’s used to control people or it's just mental masturbation which I think Grudem should have said. I try hard not to spend any time in his head, but he gets to a central problem. Is God in absolute control? Is he a dictator who only pretends to be compassionate? For many Calvinists that’s exactly what it means. In this episode, I review a book that was very influential to me in seminary. It confirms my skepticism about Calvin and systematic theology in general. I think this skepticism is healthy. I think everyone should ask whether it’s all nonsense at a couple times in life. Theology is necessarily tedious and almost unreadable in many cases. Too often theology just makes easy things hard. I try to trust in the God of loving grace and not a dictator.
