Listen "4. Why Tram 83 Changed My Mind About Jazz with Dr. Ato Quayson"
Episode Synopsis
In this episode, we’re talking about Tram 83 by Fiston Mwanza Mujila, which is a post-colonial critique that centers around two friends reunited in an unnamed city-state in Africa. For Dr Ato Quayson, Tram 83 is the book that changed my mind about jazz and political allegory.
Now, Ato is dope. He’s currently an English professor at Stanford University, whose academic work lives at the intersection of postcolonial literature, disability studies, urban studies, and diaspora studies.
Our conversation with him also covered a lot of ground from fashion to jazz, neo-colonialism, extractive capitalism, the resourcefulness and resilience of women, writing a new story of Africa and wondering, who is African, as well as Zoom dance parties.
We had a lot of fun in this conversation and hope that you enjoy it too!
