*Manipulation and Media: How Borneoland Timber Attempts to Legitimize Logging in Penan Territory*
Nick explained about the contradiction between two media statements issued by the BMF and answered by the Sarawak Forestry Department regarding the alleged logging by the Borneoland Timber Resources Company in the UBFA/Taman Damai Baram area. BMF claims/with photo evidence that logging has occurred and threatens the tropical rainforest in Hulu Baram Ba Data Bila. However, the Director of the Forest Department explained that it was an effort to build roads, bridges, houses for the Penan people and other facilities to improve the standard of living of the Penan people. Yes, the Penan people want infrastructure but not logging. - said Nick. The consultation that was done a few months ago - the Penan people agreed that a road and bridge should be built to Ba Data Bila and Ba Mubui and when it is ready. So the company should get out of the Penan forest. Now the road and bridge construction works have been completed, but Borneoland does not want to leave and instead continues the road construction to Ba Benalie and Long Pengaran. The result of the Penan people's observation. While building the road this company cut down trees on the left and right of the road, leading to logging. This is what the Penan people objected to. Despite strong objections, the company ignored the residents' objections. This company is trying to prove that their logging activities are supported by the state government, the forest department and even supported by Sarawak Premier Johari Openg. Even on 11 July 2024, when the Premier of Sarawak visited Miri to inaugurate the new SJKC Pei Min Middle School. Tauke Borneoland Timber brought a group of Penan people to meet and take pictures with Premier Johari Openg. According to Nick this is to show that the Borneoland company is supported by the Premier and the Sarawak State Government. Prime Minister Johari Openg on 8 June 2024- said there is no more logging politics in Sarawak, but in early July he supported the logging company cutting wood in the Penan reserve forest. Should the people of Sarawak believe the words that come out of the mouth of Sarawak Premier Johari Openg?.
