Listen "#8:Geraldine McGrath - Breaking the Silence: Confronting Suicide and Ending the Stigma"
Episode Synopsis
In 2019, when I first became a suicide prevention trainer, I was paralysed by the weight of one critical question. How could I possibly ask someone if they were considering suicide? That question, as uncomfortable as it was, became the most significant lesson I took from an intensive week of training. The truth is, suicide must be spoken about. Silence only perpetuates the stigma, and the stigma is not only unhealthy, it's deadly. Let's confront the reality: the latest UK figures report 6,199 confirmed suicides. That's nearly 17 lives lost every single day. And these numbers don't account for unreported suicides, which could push this figure 5% to 25% higher. Here in Northern Ireland, the statistics are particularly alarming. In 2016, 77% of suicides involved young people aged just 15 to 25. Why are so many of our young people being lost to this tragedy? What societal beliefs, pressures, or stigmas are we perpetuating that contribute to this devastating reality? It's time to ask ourselves some hard questions: • What beliefs about mental health are you willing to let go of? • Are you ready to be part of the change? The change starts with us. By learning, by talking, and by breaking the silence around suicide, we can begin to dismantle the stigma and create a world where more people feel seen, heard, and supported. Let's start the conversation that could save lives.
