When Celia began traveling at the age of 16, she became fascinated with the art and aesthetic traditions she saw on her journeys. She didn't know at 16 that she would become an art historian, but these early experiences laid the foundation for her interest in studying artists who cross cultural boundaries. However, she had many interests, such as psychology, dance, film, writing, and reading, both fiction, and nonfiction. It was challenging for her to choose one major in college. First, she was a psychology major, then an English major.
Ultimately, she discovered that art history fed all her different passions. Many of her interests were connected in some way to the artists and art movements to which she was drawn. She feels fortunate to live in the San Francisco Bay Area with its richly diverse communities and beautiful natural surroundings.
Celia Stahr teaches art history at the University of San Francisco. She’s interested in women artists and artists who cross cultural boundaries. She fell in love with the power of Frida Kahlo's art in the 1980s, a feeling that has intensified over the years. Frida in America took 10 years to research and write, but Stahr never lost interest in this fascinating woman and artist.
